Driving licence at age 17

...or: Accompanied driving

Since the beginning of 2008 you can get your "driving licence at 17" in Germany. This means you no longer have to be of age to obtain a car driving licence. There is one more condition: As the official name "accompanied driving" suggests, until your 18th birthday an adult has to accompany you when you drive.

This is how you can get a driving licence at 17

From the age of 16 and a half you can register with a driving school for car driving licence class B (or BE), provided your parents agree. If you want to be well prepared for your theory test, we recommend that you study with Führerschein-bestehen.de . Here you study with a learning plan that is tailored to you and that will automatically prepare you for the driving test.

You can sit the practical test no earlier than 1 month before your 17th birthday. You are officially allowed to drive a car once you are 17. You do not get a driving licence, but rather a test certificate incl. the special approval for the driving licence at age 17, but that should not worry you.

Validity & transfer

The driving licence at age 17 is only valid in Germany. From your 18th birthday you still have 3 months before you apply for a full driving licence. After that, the test certificate expires.

Conditions that must be met by the mandatory accompanying person

  • She must be at least 30 years old
  • Her name must be entered on the test certificate
  • She has to have a class B (previously class 3) driving licence for at least 5 years
  • She must not have more than 3 Flensburg points
